How to Prepare for Competition Tanning

Competition tanning prep starts before you arrive at the studio. A little planning can help your color apply more evenly and make appointment day less stressful. Follow your tanning professional’s instructions first, since products and timing can vary. In the days leading up to your appointment, focus on gentle skin care, sensible hair removal, and clean, product-free skin. Then pack the items you’ll need to protect your tan and get ready for the stage.

Plan Your Skin Care

Keep your skin comfortable and hydrated in the days before your appointment. Use a familiar, fragrance-free moisturizer, but follow your studio’s directions about when to stop applying it. On appointment day, arrive with clean, dry skin unless your tanning professional tells you otherwise. Lotions, oils, deodorant, perfume, and makeup can interfere with an even application.

Avoid trying new skin-care products or treatments close to your tan. Strong exfoliating acids, retinoids, chemical peels, waxing, and other irritating procedures may leave skin sensitive or uneven. If you have a rash, sunburn, open cut, or recent treatment, tell your tanning professional before the session so you can discuss the safest next step.

Exfoliate and Shave Carefully

Exfoliate gently before your appointment to lift dry, flaky skin and create a smoother surface. Pay attention to areas that tend to feel rough, such as elbows, knees, ankles, and hands, but don’t scrub until skin looks or feels irritated. Use a clean washcloth or a mild scrub you already know works for you, and rinse away any residue.

If you shave, do it according to your studio’s recommended timing, ideally early enough to let any irritation settle. Use a clean razor and a gentle shaving product, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid shaving immediately before the session if that tends to cause redness or bumps. If you wax or use another hair-removal method, ask the studio how far in advance to schedule it.

Keep Appointment Day Simple

Before leaving home, shower if directed and make sure your skin is completely dry. Skip moisturizer, deodorant, makeup, and fragranced products unless your tanning professional specifically approves them. Wear loose, dark clothing that is easy to put on and won’t rub against freshly tanned skin. Choose footwear that won’t press tightly on your feet.

Bring your competition schedule and any instructions from your coach or show organizer. Tell the tanning team about skin sensitivities, recent hair removal, or areas that need special attention. At Austin Tan Lab, share your show date and timing when booking so the team can help you plan around your appointment and stage preparation.

Pack a Small Tan Kit

Pack loose, dark clothing, easy-on footwear, and a hair tie if you need to keep hair off your skin. Bring a towel or cover-up for the trip home if your studio recommends one. Check whether you should bring posing trunks, a suit, or other items for coverage during the appointment; don’t assume the studio supplies them.

Add your event details, appointment confirmation, and any approved touch-up products to your bag. Ask the studio what to use and when, rather than applying oils, lotions, or powders on your own. After your session, follow the given instructions for drying, rinsing, and dressing. Avoid activities that could cause sweating or rubbing until your tan has set as directed.

A smooth competition tan begins with calm, prepared skin and a simple appointment-day routine. Confirm timing and product instructions with your tanning professional, especially if you have sensitive skin or a tight show schedule. Make your checklist, pack the night before, and contact Austin Tan Lab to discuss appointment planning.
